Elk River parks and recreation

• Woodland Trails Regional Park — 427 acres of dense woods, prairie, and wetland, the crown jewel of the Elk River park system, with an archery range and nature play area added in 2020
• The Great Northern Trail, a 4.75-mile paved regional trail running through Woodland Trails north to the city limits
• Hillside Park, with more than six miles of challenging mountain bike trails through 80 acres of oak forest
• Orono Park on Lake Orono — boat launch, splash pad, fishing pier, swimming beach, sand volleyball, dog park, and skate park
• Rivers Edge Commons Park downtown, with a dock for Mississippi River fishing
• Bailey Point Nature Preserve, an easy 0.8-mile loop through restored prairie
• Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing at Woodland Trails in winter
• The Oliver Kelley Farm, a Minnesota Historical Society living-history site on the river, and Elk River Country Club for golf
• Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge — more than 30,000 acres of prairie, wetland, and oak savanna, roughly twenty minutes north

Community and convenience

Elk River supports a senior activity center, the Furniture and Things Community Event Center, an annual farmers market, adult softball and volleyball leagues, and a deep bench of youth programs — tumbling, soccer, flag football, basketball, t-ball, skating, and hockey. Students attend Elk River Area School District 728. Highways 169 and 10 put full-service retail, medical care, and the northwest metro within easy reach, and for transit commuters, the Northstar rail line ended service in January 2026 and was replaced by expanded bus service between the Big Lake station area and downtown Minneapolis; Route 882 runs weekday trips between Big Lake, Elk River, and downtown Minneapolis under a two-year pilot.
