Everyday convenience
Zimmerman is served by Elk River Area School District 728, with four schools inside the city — two elementary, a middle school, and a high school — so students can stay in town from kindergarten through graduation. Highway 169 runs straight south to Elk River, about ten miles away, for full-service grocery, retail, and medical care, and continues on into the northwest metro. For transit commuters, the Northstar rail line ended service in January 2026 and was replaced by expanded bus service between the Big Lake station area and downtown Minneapolis; Route 882 now runs weekday trips between Big Lake, Elk River, and downtown Minneapolis under a two-year pilot.
